This was a great read! I loved the details of looking up at all the faces looking down at you and the memories of their reactions. However there was a little PSTD for me as a close friend had an accident at our house on Thanksgiving in 2009. She was riding a dirt bike my brother-in-law brought and was hit by a truck in front of our house. They actually had to restrain me to keep me away from her, I was so distraught. She had a traumatic brain injury, ruptured spleen, femur broken in two places as well as ribs, and later we found, foot. She was in an induced coma for 2 weeks. Thousands were praying for her and she woke up saying, tell Uncle Mike sorry about the bike. It was pretty miraculous! She's grown now with a family but boy, these events sure do mark us don't they? I loved that your mom made that little device so that you could read. I wonder how she handled all of it after the warning went unheeded? My daughter is an addict so I kind of get that. All the warnings unheeded. Mothers bear the brunt of all the things. Although your father sounds like a dear man.
